Paul Smith was invited by Christopher and Suzanne Sharp to bring his inspirational and powerful designs to The Rug Company as one of the first fashion designers to join the Designer Collection, this was 15 years ago. Paul Smith’s confident, bright rug designs can transform a room. They are an extension of his clothes designs, and many have enjoyed such perennial success that they have become undoubted icons of design. Paul Smith extended his collection for The Rug Company with sophisticated yet playful hand-woven wallhangings and cushions. Each creation encapsulates his classically English inspiration imbued with a unique Paul Smith aesthetic.

This dynamic collaborative duo recently previewed their newest collection together at Salone De Mobile in Milan. The exhibition was a celebration of bold British design combined with the highest levels of craftsmanship. Paul Smith’s childhood memories were the inspiration behind the conceptual rug exhibition in collaboration with The Rug Company during Milan Design Week 2017.

An early photography experiment with his father resulted in Paul sitting on a flying carpet superimposed over the Royal Pavilion in Brighton. The exhibition took the flying carpet theme to a new level, and showcased a number of Paul’s new designs suspended in Paul Smith’s Milan showroom.

Inspired by the façade of Paul Smith’s Mayfair shop at No.9 Albemarle Street, London, the new Albemarle rug transforms the architectural motif into a sophisticated textile for the home. The cast iron motif is reinterpreted into the soft sheen of hand-spun silk yarns. The undulating steely grey lines shimmer against the matte wool base of the same colour, giving it a subtle movement, which alters with the light as you walk around the rug.

Contrasting the understated classicism of the Albemarle, the Overlay rug explodes with the vibrant multi-colour palette and modern stripe pattern that has become synonymous with Paul Smith. The rug will be available as a runner, with the saturated colours cascading from top to bottom.

The third new introduction, Carnival Pale, is a playful development of Paul’s classic stripes, interpreted in an understated palette of pastel tones. The pattern is layered and plays with transparency, presenting a particular challenge for The Rug Company’s weavers in Nepal. The design contains 52 colours, an extraordinarily high number for a handmade rug as each one is created individually for the rug.

The creative collection of gorgeous rugs will officially launch in the Autumn of 2017 and be available in the Dubai Showroom in Alserkal Avenue and marks another successful collaboration between the two design powerhouses, Paul Smith and the Rug Company.
