Gucci and Dapper Dan are coming together for a collaborative capsule collection! And there is something more… The fashion label is helping the legendary Harlem tailor reopen his uptown atelier. And it’s going to furnish him with upscale fabrics with which to do as he pleases.
This partnership comes shortly after the situation when Gucci ‘borrowed’ a design from Dapper Dan, on its cruise catwalk. A puffy-shouldered fur bomber designed by Dapper Done for Olympian Diane Dixon was originally emblazoned with Louis Vuitton monograms.
Creative Director Alessandro Michele clarified that it wasn’t a copy, but rather an homage to the tailor’s work. The New York Times reported now Gucci and Dapper Dan will be together again — and this time legally.
From 1982 until it closed in 1992, Dapper Dan’s Boutique was one of the hottest shops in Harlem. A Harlem-based fashion designer created flashy clothing, leather items, and car interiors, with unauthorized designer logos. Mr. Day made his own Guccis, Louis Vuittons and Fendis, for customers including Mike Tyson.
The new Dapper Dan tailor shop is set to open at the end of 2017. The collaborative capsule collection will debut next spring.
