As a longtime fan of photographer Charles Fréger’s work, Altuzarra had been in touch with the photographer for several months leading up to the Spring/Summer 2018 show. The inspiration for the designer’s S/S18 collection began with Hayao Miyazaki’s animated film Princess Mononoke. Its narrative centers on the conflict between nature and industry, one that uncannily reflects our grim environmental reality. This then inspired Altuzarra to explore knitting, sewing, and all things handmade—a newfound fascination with the imperfect—which then led him to Fréger. Focusing on the theme of nature/nurture, the pair produced a gorgeous series of photos that speak to the intricate nature of creative collaboration.
